Wegovy

Wegovy has become one of the well-known prescription medications used as part of comprehensive weight management for people living with obesity or overweight with weight-related health conditions.

It contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) that helps regulate appetite, increase feelings of fullness, and support long-term weight management when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 2.5 billion adults worldwide were overweight in 2022, including more than 890 million adults living with obesity.
Obesity is considered a chronic and complex disease that requires long-term management.

What Are Wegovy Injections?

Wegovy is a prescription medication containing semaglutide, which is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity to help eligible patients lose weight and maintain weight loss.

Semaglutide works by mimicking the action of the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1. It helps regulate appetite and food intake and may slow gastric emptying, allowing patients to feel fuller for longer and potentially consume fewer calories.

Wegovy should only be used under medical supervision after assessing the patient's overall health, Body Mass Index (BMI), medical history, and weight-related conditions.

Key Benefits of Wegovy Injections

When medically appropriate, Wegovy injections may help:

  1. Reduce appetite and food cravings
  2. Increase feelings of fullness and satiety
  3. Support significant and sustained weight loss
  4. Improve certain health markers associated with obesity
  5. Reduce the risk of certain weight-related complications in eligible patients

In the United States, Wegovy has also been approved to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in certain adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight.

How to Use Wegovy and Recommended Dosage

Wegovy injections are generally administered once weekly as a subcutaneous injection. The injection can be given in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.

Treatment typically starts with a low dose of 0.25 mg once weekly for four weeks. The dose is then gradually increased every four weeks, depending on the patient's response and tolerability.

This gradual dose escalation is designed to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal side effects.
For many adults, the recommended maintenance dose is 2.4 mg once weekly, although the appropriate dose may vary depending on the individual's treatment plan and clinical circumstances.
Do not change the dose or stop Wegovy without consulting your healthcare provider.

Side Effects of Wegovy and How to Manage Them

The most common side effects of Wegovy are gastrointestinal and may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Bloating and belching
  • Indigestion

These symptoms may be more noticeable when the dose is increased and often improve as the body adjusts to treatment.
Eating smaller meals, avoiding very fatty foods, and maintaining adequate fluid intake may help reduce some digestive symptoms.
Patients should contact their healthcare provider if symptoms are severe or persistent, particularly severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, or signs of dehydration.

Wegovy also has important contraindications and warnings. It should not be used by individuals with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or by patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
It is also contraindicated in patients with a serious hypersensitivity to semaglutide or any of the medication's components.

Recommended Diet While Using Wegovy

For the best results, Wegovy should be part of a comprehensive weight-management programme that includes a balanced diet and regular physical activity.

A healthy eating plan may focus on:

  • Lean protein sources such as chicken, fish, eggs, and legumes.
  • Vegetables and fruits that provide dietary fibre.
  • Whole grains in appropriate portions.
  • Regular water intake.
  • Limiting foods high in added sugars and excess calories.
  • Reducing fried and high-fat foods, particularly if they worsen gastrointestinal symptoms.

Highly restrictive diets are generally not recommended without guidance from a qualified healthcare professional or registered dietitian.

When Does Wegovy Start Working and How Much Weight Can You Lose?

The appetite-suppressing effects of Wegovy develop gradually, so some people may notice changes in appetite during the first few weeks. However, meaningful weight loss generally occurs over a longer period and varies between individuals.

In clinical studies, Wegovy 2.4 mg combined with lifestyle intervention resulted in an average body-weight reduction of approximately 14.9% after 68 weeks in adults with obesity or overweight and a weight-related medical condition.
Among participants with type 2 diabetes, the average reduction was approximately 9.6% after 68 weeks.

These figures represent study averages and are not a guarantee of individual results. Weight loss can vary depending on factors such as age, medical conditions, dosage, diet, physical activity, and adherence to treatment.

Why Is Medical Supervision Important When Using Wegovy?

Choosing a weight-management medication should not be based solely on the desire to lose weight. A healthcare professional should assess your BMI, medical history, current medications, underlying conditions, and potential treatment risks before starting therapy.

At MCC Clinic in Muscat, Oman, our weight-management approach can include medical assessment, nutritional guidance, lifestyle modification, and prescription medication when clinically appropriate. Patients can also receive regular follow-up to monitor their progress, treatment response, and potential side effects.
